The family of a Northland police officer hit by a car over the weekend is planning her tangi and waiting for the coroner to release her body

Gail Shepherd was off duty and walking her dogs at Helena Bay near Whangarei - when a car hit a power pole, then her.

Sheperd was a constable at Houhora station and had previously served as the sole charge at Kohukohu.

Once her body is released the family will take her to Te Kao marae in the Far North.

Police are continuing to investigate the crash.
