Police accept IPCA findings they failed to act quickly to a fatal hit and run

Police accept IPCA findings they failed to act quickly to a fatal hit and run

A 111 call was made after a pedestrian was struck near Benneydale in the Waitomo District early on January 24, 2023 - the man was killed instantly.

When Police were called - it was uncertain whether the driver had hit a person or an animal.

Two night shift sergeants decided because it was a Priority two event, to wait until morning light to investigate.

Police say an internal review found the matter should have been coded as a Priority One, and Police should've been dispatched straight away.
