A radiologist's poor reporting of a CT scan may have delayed a cancer diagnosis - for a woman who died after a bowel obstruction

A radiologist's poor reporting of a CT scan may have delayed a cancer diagnosis - for a woman who died after a bowel obstruction

The woman had been extremely ill with a noticeable abdominal mass.

Her scan report noted minor issues, but no obvious malignancy - and the radiologist recommended a three-month ultrasound follow-up.

But some weeks later, after she was re-admitted, the radiologist reviewed the scan and picked up an abnormality, and an MRI later showed an obstructive cancerous mass.

Deputy Health and Disability Commissioner, Carolyn Cooper, says this breached the code of Consumer Rights - and has made several recommendations.
