Auckland's Mayor says it makes sense to move Speedway from Western Springs, after 95 years

Auckland's Mayor says it makes sense to move Speedway from Western Springs, after 95 years

This summer will be its last at the site.

Councillors voted 11-to-eight to relocate racing to Onehunga's Waikaraka Park - which'll get an 11-million-dollar upgrade.

Wayne Brown says the speedway ran at an annual loss to ratepayers, topping a million a year.

He says this'll free up Western Springs for other events.

Brown says he wants to get more use out of what we have, like making rugby union and league share pitches.
