West Coast residents are assessing the damage caused by heavy rain

West Coast residents are assessing the damage caused by heavy rain

Widespread downpours in Westland forced people to leave their homes, caused slips and brought down trees - prompting a state of emergency, which has ended.

State Highway 6 from Fox Glacier to Haast remains closed until at least tomorrow.

Westland Mayor Helen Lash is reminding people support is available if they need it.

She says if people need help, or something has happened they're not aware of, they should reach out.
