A quarterfinal berth awaits both New Zealand rugby sevens teams, despite mixed results on the first day of the series opener in Dubai

The women's side charged into the final eight, with crushing wins over Brazil, Japan and Canada in pool play.

Meanwhile, the men's team have qualified as the highest-ranked third-placed team in the group stages.

That's despite stunned 26-14 by Spain, and losing 21-12 to Fiji.

The women take on Ireland in their quarterfinal tonight, while the men challenge South Africa.
