Classic yachts are taking to the water in the 185th Auckland Anniversary Regatta

Classic yachts are taking to the water in the 185th Auckland Anniversary Regatta

New Zealand's oldest sporting event is underway, with seven yacht clubs taking part, including championships for the 29er, 4-20 and 4-70 classes.

14 boats took part in the Classic Launch Race from Westhaven to Orakei and back.

Chair Bill Lomas says the oldest classic boat first raced 120 years ago.

He says it may have missed a couple for refitting, but it's still out there racing, so people should keep an eye out for its big sails.
