A risk of flooding and slips with a storm forecast to track over the central North Island, from 3pm

MetService has issued a severe thunderstorm watch until 10pm.

It covers a large area from southern Waikato and eastern Waitomo - to Taumarunui, Taupo and southwest of Rotorua.

Metereologist John Law says heavy showers could change into a storm quickly.

He says the thunderstorms will be slow moving which brings a risk of localised heavy rain.
