A murderer has been declined parole - 18 years since the former Black Power member bludgeoned his girlfriend to death in Whangarei

A murderer has been declined parole - 18 years since the former Black Power member bludgeoned his girlfriend to death in Whangarei

Nick Fenton killed 17-year-old Mairina Dunn in 2006 during a 90-minute drug-fuelled attack - leading to a 10 day manhunt.

Open Justice reports he's re-appeared before the parole board today, speaking about his efforts to mentor younger inmates.

Panel Convenor, Kathryn Snook, commended Fenton's progress, but warns he needs more focus on himself and his reintegration.

The board has asked to see him again in 12 months.
