A Taupo high school is closed until at least tomorrow, after fire destroyed a block of classrooms, with two people charged

Fire crews were called to the blaze at Taupo-nui-a-Tia College about 2.15 yesterday afternoon.

Police say two young people have been charged.

Principal Ben Claxton says the fire's caused significant damage and a full assessment's being carried out.

He says student and staff wellbeing is the school's absolute priority.

The Ministry of Education says it's working to minimise disruptions and planning next steps.
