| | | PC World - 7 Jan (PC World)Today at CES 2025, Dell announced that they’re bringing back the iconic Alienware Area-51 gaming laptops, which were known for their desktop-level CPUs and easy access for upgrades.
This time, they come armed with the latest hardware as well as a new thermal architecture for better internal cooling. The otherworldly design is also just really cool. Let’s dive into the details!
Alienware Area-51 gaming laptops
Dell’s revitalized Area-51 laptops come in two flavors: 16 inches and 18 inches. The top-tier configurations feature an Intel Core Ultra 7 255HX processor and the next generation of Nvidia GeForce GPUs (likely the 50-Series, though Dell didn’t specify). They’ll also have up to 64GB of DDR5 RAM and up to 12TB (3x4TB) of NVMe M.2 PCIe SSD storage.
Wow. Just wow.
In addition to the beefy internal components, the display looks stellar. Both models boast either a 16-inch or 18-inch display with a resolution of 2560×1600, a refresh rate of 240Hz, and a response time of 3ms. Gameplay should be as smooth as your mother’s freshly churned butter, perfect for competitive titles in which every millisecond matters.
Dell
As for cooling, the “Cryo-tech” thermal architecture is capable of pushing 37 percent more air through the machine than previous iterations, according to Dell. This is achieved by managing air flow, fan speed, and so on. An efficient cooling system has a major impact on gaming laptop performance, and those top-tier internals generate a lot of heat!
These are also the first Alienware laptops to support PCIe Gen5 SSD storage. “When combined with Microsoft DirectStorage technology, now the GPU can directly access SSDs, which makes games run even faster than ever before,” said Dell.
Finally, the new Liquid Teal finish, which gives the laptop an iridescent sheen, is to die for. I love the major departure from the clichéd gamer aesthetic (i.e., black chassis with red accents), which never was my cup of tea. On the underside of the laptop, you’ll find a Gorilla Glass window, which allows you to see all the internal bits and bobs inside of the machine. The RGB fans also cast a cool underglow, which you can see shining up through the keyboard.
The new Alienware Area-51 gaming laptops are expected to launch later in Q1 2025 with an entry-level configuration price of $1,999. Read...Newslink ©2025 to PC World

| | | PC World - 7 Jan (PC World)At CES 2025, AMD revealed the Ryzen 9 9950X3D for desktop PCs, which the company is calling both the “world’s best gaming processor” and the “world’s best processor for content creation.”
On paper, the comparison is brutal: AMD says its new chip is 20 percent faster in gaming than Intel’s Arrow Lake flagship, the Core Ultra 285K.
AMD will ship the Ryzen 9 9950X3D and a second Ryzen 9 chip with v-cache, the Ryzen 9900X3D, to PC makers and customers beginning in the first quarter of 2025. Both of AMD’s new desktop chips outperform the existing Ryzen 9800X3D in terms of clock speed and core count — and give buyers additional choices to fill out their gaming systems. Remember, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D obliterated the competition in its review, then immediately sold out.
AMD also said that will bring the X3D architecture to laptops with its “Fire Range” lineup of mobile processors, too. (We’ve covered that in a separate story.)
Here’s what AMD is launching today:
AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D: 16 cores/32 threads, 5.7GHz turbo, 144MB cache, 170W TDP.
AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D: 12 cores/24 threads, 5.5GHz turbo, 140MB cache, 120W TDP.
By comparison, AMD launched the Ryzen 7 9800X3D at the end of October, with 8 cores/16 threads, a base clock speed of 4.7GHz (5.2GHz turbo), a TDP of 120W, and 104MB cache, for $479. What AMD is disclosing today lacks a couple of key metrics: the base clock speed and most importantly, the price. Apparently AMD will release both of those details nearer to the actual availability of the two new processors.
AMD believes its Ryzen 9 9950X3D will top Intel’s Arrow Lake chips in content creation…AMD
AMD hasn’t changed the design of the Core Complex Die from the 7950X3D: each of the chip’s two CCDs has access to the stacked V-Cache, or SRAM, capable of pulling data from the cached memory rather than pulling it from system memory. The other die features unstacked cache, running at a maximum frequency to allow content-creation apps to run as fast as possible. (AMD’s previous family of Ryzen 7000X3D chips stacked the V-Cache on top of the CCD; the Ryzen 9000X3D family places the CCD on top, stacking the V-Cache underneath it, for better heat dissipation and to achieve higher clock speeds.)
From a gaming perspective, AMD is confident that its new Ryzen 9950X3D will handily outperform the Intel Core Ultra 285K.
…but also especially gaming, where the Ryzen 9 9950X3D trounces Arrow Lake in most games.AMD
At 1080p “High” settings, AMD’s Ryzen 9 9950X3D outperforms the 285K by an average of 20 percent, AMD said. That includes games like Black Myth Wukong (a wash) all the way up to Far Cry 6 and Watch Dogs: Legion, where the performance gap widens to over 60 percent. Compared to AMD’s older Ryzen 7950X3D, the 9950X3D is about 8 percent faster, again at 1080p High settings. AMD didn’t use the same group of games for each test, however.
If there has been a flaw in the Ryzen X3D’s armor, though, it’s been in productivity applications. The faster clock speed that AMD has added to the Ryzen 9 9950X3D should help overcome that, AMD believes, and that boost was enabled by the company’s second-gen v-cache technology. In applications ranging from Cinebench 2024 (essentially identical) to Adobe Premiere (a 14 percent advantage to AMD) to Adobe Photoshop (a 47 percent advantage to AMD), AMD believes it holds a 10 percent average performance advantage over Intel’s Core Ultra 285K chip.
AMD’s 9950X3D also outperforms its older 7950X3D chip by a substantial amount.AMD
Again, a key factor in how these chips will fare will be how AMD eventually prices them. But based upon the existing review of the Ryzen 7 7800X3D and how it’s vanished from store shelves, AMD could have another pair of winners in its hands. Read...Newslink ©2025 to PC World
| | | PC World - 7 Jan (PC World)Today at CES 2025, Acer announced their newest Nitro V AI lineup of gaming laptops infused with artificial intelligence. Not only are they designed to consume less power (and extend battery life), but they also feature AI-powered graphics thanks to Nvidia’s DLSS 3.5 technology.
AI really is an all-consuming thing, huh? Let’s jump into the details.
Acer’s Nitro V AI laptops
The Acer Nitro V AI comes in three different sizes: 15 inches, 16 inches, and 17 inches. Personally, I’m a big fan of various size options, as some folks will prefer the more portable 15-inch variety while others may want the bigger 17-inch display for maximum immersion.
The top-tier configurations of the Acer Nitro V 16 AI and the Acer Nitro V 17 AI come loaded with an AMD Ryzen AI 7 350 processor, which is based on the latest Zen 5 architecture and both faster and more power-efficient than previous Zen 4 CPUs. They also feature RTX 4050 graphics with Nvidia’s DLSS 3.5 tech. But what does that mean exactly?
Simply put, Nvidia’s DLSS 3.5 works to upscale graphics using a neural network. It makes your games look prettier and more lifelike by improving the quality of ray-traced frames. This process is called Ray Reconstruction and you can read more about it here. Nvidia DLSS 3.5 is useful if you’re really into games with ray tracing, like Cyberpunk 2077.
As for resolutions and refresh rates, each laptop model has slight differences. The Nitro V 17 AI, for example, has a 17.3-inch display with a 2560×1440 resolution and 165Hz refresh rate. The Nitro V 16 AI, on the other hand, rocks a 16-inch panel with a 2560×1600 resolution and 180Hz refresh rate. Given those numbers, you can expect fluid gameplay and sharp-looking pictures either way.
The Acer Nitro V 15 AI has multiple configurations in itself, with the top-tier version equipped with an AMD Ryzen 7 8845HX CPU instead of the AMD Ryzen AI 7 350 CPU. It also has a lower resolution display (1920×1080) and a smaller battery (57 watt-hours as opposed to 76 watt-hours). The RTX 4050 graphics card remains the same, though.
The Acer Nitro V 16 AI and the Acer Nitro V 17 AI are set to release in July 2025, and the Acer Nitro V 15 AI will launch in February 2025. No word on the pricing yet, but we’ve reached out to Acer for that information and will update this article accordingly once we hear back. Read...Newslink ©2025 to PC World
| | | PC World - 7 Jan (PC World)The rumors were true! AMD unveiled the Radeon RX 9070 and 9070 XT during the company’s CES 2025 keynote on Monday, powered by the next-generation RDNA 4 architecture with a new AI-focused version of FSR (FidelityFX Super Resolution) in tow.
Gamers hoping for deep details were left wanting, however, as AMD classified this as a “preview” without much hard information. It was more of a tease than anything, honestly, though it’s clear that AMD is finally, truly embracing AI hardware within GPUs. Here’s what we do know.
AMD
For years, AMD has battled Nvidia’s vaunted DLSS using (mostly) graphics cores rather than integrating dedicated AI hardware. Not anymore.
AMD says RDNA 4 was built from the ground up on TSMC’s 4nm process to “supercharge” AI performance, driven by a massive overhaul to the AI compute architecture. Next-gen Radeon GPUs will also benefit from an upgraded ray tracing architecture, as well as “substantial improvements” to the second-gen AMD Radiance Display Engine’s encode and decode performance.
So far, so good — though the devil will be in the details around this seemingly monumental architecture change for Radeon, and AMD isn’t providing any more details than this just yet.
AMD
The added AI chops in RDNA 4 and the Radeon RX 9070 will be immediately augmented by a new software feature: FidelityFX Super Resolution 4. AMD told press that FSR 4 revolves around machine learning-based upscaling (like Nvidia’s DLSS) and was developed specifically for the new AI accelerators in RDNA 4. The company teased it with a screenshot of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6.
Expect to see “dramatic” performance and quality improvements versus prior versions of FSR, per AMD. Which makes sense, given that AMD’s primarily GPU-based FSR technology has lagged in those areas compared to DLSS and even Intel’s XeSS features, which both tap into dedicated AI hardware to provide buttery-smooth upscaled gaming experiences.
To drive home that Radeon is embracing AI now, the company’s Adrenalin Software will also add a generative AI tab, where you can create images from text prompts or ask AI to summarize local documents. Eh, okay.
AMD
AMD finished its teaser with a splash shot of Radeon RX 9070 graphics cards from a variety of board partners. All the usual suspects are here, with the odd exception of MSI.
The company also provided press with the above slide to try to illustrate what AMD is trying to do with its new model numbers. Radeon is leaping to the 9000-series (to align with Ryzen 9000-series branding) while also moving branding for specific GPU models from the 100s to the 10s spot in the name (to align with Nvidia’s scheme). AMD wants you to know that the Radeon RX 9070 is an Nvidia RTX 5090 competitor, essentially.
AMD
And that is probably why AMD is light on RDNA 4 details at CES. Its keynote was held mere hours ahead of Nvidia’s own, where Jensen Huang is expected to reveal the hotly anticipated GeForce RTX 50-series GPUs. AMD likely wants to see where its rival’s pricing and performance fall before committing to specific segments itself.
Either way, it’s great to see AMD finally embrace the potential of dedicated AI hardware. AI upscaling is killing native graphics, after all. The company says it’ll provide more information about the Radeon RX 9070 and RDNA 4 ahead of launch sometime in the first quarter of 2025. Read...Newslink ©2025 to PC World
