The Northland Regional Council says the region is in one of the most severe droughts on record.
NIWA says there will be some significant showers for the North Island through until next week.
Principal Scientist Chris Brandolino says that's also good news for Auckland, Hamilton and Tauranga which have also recorded their driest months on record from January through to April.
He says this weekend and through into early next week there will be some significant showers.
