    Brief forecast for the Mountains up to midnight on Friday 21 February

    north island

    Kaimanawa to Raukumara Forest Park
    Cloudy periods and isolated showers.

    Egmont National Park
    Cloud about the Summit, otherwise fine.

    Remaining North Island areas

    Light today. Northwesterlies developing tomorrow, rising to gale for Egmont
    National park and the Tararua and Ruahine ranges later.

    About 4000 metres.

    south island

    Kahurangi and Nelson Lakes national parks and the Kaikoura Ranges
    Fine today. A period of heavy rain tomorrow afternoon and evening.

    Remaining South Island areas
    Cloud increasing. Heavy rain developing in Fiordland tonight, spreading north
    tomorrow and easing to showers from the south in the afternoon. Snow to 1800
    metres in Fiordland tomorrow night.

    Northwesterlies, rising to severe gale in Fiordland this evening and elsewhere
    tomorrow. Changing lighter westerly from the south tomorrow afternoon.

    Above 3500 metres, lowering to 2000 metres in Fiordland tomorrow night.
