    Mostly cloudy, low in the west. Occasional rain developing this afternoon.

    Remaining North Island mountain areas
    Low cloud and periods of rain. Becoming heavy about the Tararuas tomorrow afternoon.

    WINDS
    Westerlies rising to gale this afternoon, and to severe gale about Tararua Forest Park.

    FREEZING LEVEL
    Above 3000 metres.

    Richmond and Kaikoura Ranges
    Cloud increasing. Rain developing around the Richmond Range this afternoon, spreading to the Kaikoura ranges by tomorrow morning.

    Kahurangi and Nelson Lakes
    Periods of rain, becoming persistent and possibly heavy this evening.

    Arthur's Pass National Park to Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park
    Rain becoming persistent this afternoon, heavy at times, then gradually easing after midday tomorrow.

    Mt Aspiring and Fiordland National Parks
    Rain, heavy at times with possible thunderstorms from this evening, then easing by tomorrow morning.

    WINDS
    Westerlies or northwesterlies, gale to severe gale in exposed places.

    FREEZING LEVEL
    3000 metres, but 2500 metres in the south, and lowering further to 1700 metres by tomorrow morning.
