FREEZING LEVEL Above 3000 metres. south islandPeriods of rain, widespread and heavy, especially west of the main divide. Thunderstorms possible north of Aoraki/Mt. Cook this afternoon. Rain gradually easing overnight to showers west of the divide, and partly cloudy elsewhere. WINDS Gale northwesterlies, but severe gale in exposed places, easing in the south this afternoon, and elsewhere overnight. FREEZING LEVEL 3000 metres in the north, sloping to 2000 metres in the south, lowering to 1500 metres in the south by tomorrow evening.
