    Rain with heavy falls, and possible downpours, gradually easing from the west this afternoon and evening followed by showers.

    Ruahine and Tararua ranges
    Periods of rain, possibly heavy.

    WINDS
    Gale northerlies, easing a little and turning strong northwest this afternoon or evening.

    FREEZING LEVEL
    Above 3000 metres.

    south island

    North of Mount Cook
    Periods of rain or showers, possibly heavy.

    Remaining South Island mountain areas
    Cloudy periods and a few showers.

    WINDS
    West or northwest winds, gale at times in Fiordland.

    3500 metres in the north sloping to 3000 metres in Fiordland.
