Wellington's being left in the dust, as it's economy struggles to keep up with the rest of the country

    4 March 2026
One hundred and 33 businesses in the city have closed in the three months to December, and the wider Wellington region's facing the worst employment growth in New Zealand.

Infometrics Quarterly Economic Monitor shows business counts rose 1.1 percent across the year for the country as a whole, while in Wellington it dropped by 2.3 percent.

Infometrics warns the labour market shows no sign of picking up, with the capital losing 2.8 percent of jobs over the past year, while the national average fell 1.2.
