    Recreational Marine: Bay of Plenty
    Marine Weather Situation and Forecast issued at 1104hrs Friday 23-Jan-2026 by MetService

    Situation:
    A slow moving low lies to the southeast of the country, with unstable westerlies covering much of New Zealand. A front followed by southerlies moves up the east of the South Island and the lower North Island tomorrow. Sunday, a cool showery southwest flow persists over the country. A high slowly builds across New Zealand from Monday, blanketing the country by the end of Tuesday. A northwest flow strengthens over the lower South Island late on Wednesday.

    Forecast for Inshore waters from Matakana Island to Mayor Island to Motiti Island and then east to Torere River mouth

    Friday: Northwest 15 knots, rising to 20 knots in the afternoon, and to 25 knots gusting 35 knots late evening. Sea becoming rough in the evening. Cloudy periods. Poor visibility in evening showers. Northerly swell 1.5 metres.
    Saturday: Northwest 25 knots gusting 35 knots, rising to westerly 30 knots gusting 40 knots early morning, then to northwest 35 knots gusting 50 knots late morning. Easing to westerly 25 knots gusting 35 knots in the evening. Sea becoming very rough for a time between late morning and evening. Cloudy periods with poor visibility in showers, easing evening. Possible afternoon thunderstorms. Northerly swell 1.5 metres.
    Sunday: Westerly 25 knots, easing to 20 knots in the morning. A few showers. Northerly swell 1 metre.
    Monday: Westerly 20 knots, easing to 10 knots late. Partly cloudy. Northerly swell 1 metre dying out.
    Tuesday: Northwest 10 knots, easing to variable 5 knots late. Partly cloudy.

    High Tide at Whakatane:
    Friday 2316 1.9 metres
    Saturday 1141 2.1 metres
